Outer Body Experiences
76
I lived and worked in Japan for nine years and the last three years I spent in a place called Sakura.
It was a summer 's day during those final years in Japan and I was taking a nap with my family. It was late afternoon and I was lying beside my wife and two children who were fast asleep. It was hot and humid and I could hear the sound of the crickets.
I was awake and not thinking of anything in particular when it felt like a parting of the waters of the ocean and I was suddenly above my body looking down at the scene from the ceiling. I started to fly around the room above my body and I could clearly see my wife and two children sleeping below. I tried calling to them but they could not hear me.
Then something strange started to happen. I looked at the door and as soon as I did I became the door. I became the wood of the door and yet I was also separate. I became one with the atoms that made up the wood and the scene I could see was visually beautiful and so intricate. I started to feel one with every atom in the universe and it was as if I was the universe. I started to then experience different states that I am simply unable to describe here in words and it was a very exhilarating experience everything kept happening as if layers were being unfolded before me.
I finally became water and during this phase of the experience I became afraid and as soon as I felt fear I emerged from the water as if I had been under water and popped up to the surface. Up to this point I was not aware of my breathing or that I needed to breathe until I emerged from the experience gasping for breath as if I had been submerged in water and was drowning. I woke my wife and children who became concerned when they saw me in distress gasping for air beside them.
The out of body experience left me feeling separate from myself but yet connected in a way I had never felt before. It reminded me of the first time I had ever read about the idea that we may not be our bodies. I was eighteen years old and and I opened the newspaper to an article written by Raymond Moody MD in which he recounted numerous interviews with people from all over the united States who had died for a few minutes and came back to life. I was fascinated by what this Psychiatrist had to say.The fact that he was a medical practitioner gave authenticity to what he had to say and I was so enthralled that it sparked in me an interest that I would follow for the rest of my life.
Soon after I bought his book Life After Life. I could not put the book down and my views about life and death would be changed forever. In his book Life After Life Raymond Moody deals with over a hundred real case studies of people who were deemed clinically dead and were subsequently revived. The book was first published in 1975 and at the time of the writing of this hub has a 4.5 star rating on Amazon with over 90 positve reviews. This amazing exploration into life after death revolutionised peoples' attitudes at the time about the life after death and established Raymond Moody as the world's leading authority in the whole area of near-death experiences. I am just one of millions whose ideas regarding death were completely changed as a result of reading this book and it all makes such perfect sense.
The case studies included in the book very clearly provide tangible evidence for life after death. The testimonials recounted by Dr Moody bear out his positive message for the world and put death in the perspective it was always meant to be and not something dark or anything we need fear.
Life After Life by Dr Raymond Moody
Dr Moody went on to write several more books on of which gives detailed proof of reincarnation. This book is called Life Before Life and is an equally captivating read that will change the way you think about life and make you appreciate the miracle that is your life right now.

Hi, I also have read both of Raymond Moody years ago, and found them fascinating. One of the reasons that I started to get interested in these sort of subjects was because, even as a teenager I experienced what I believe to be out of the body experiences, I remember laying on my bed and thinking that I was facing my clock, I was shocked to realise that I was actually looking down at it, then a few years later, something woke me up and for a few seconds I felt that I was floating above myself, in a panic I looked up and saw the bedroom ceiling swirling with a white mist, a bit like a whirlpool but the end was attached to me, I jumped out of bed and screamed waking up my husband, he couldn't understand what I was screaming about, so I tried to explain but he said I must have been dreaming, I really enjoyed the video of the two of them talking, fascinating, cheers nell
Spirit Whisperer, this happens to me from time to time, yet not so regularly. Sometimes it scares you, but on some occasions it might be liberating. who knows :/
Btw doesn't sakura in Japanese mean cherry ??
And another question : " why do japanese happen to have this certain importance for the sakura in their culture?"
Very interesting. I would like to read the books by Mr. Moody. I have never heard of this!
Thank you SW - im already wanting to know what I will learn!
Also it is really interesting that you lived in Japan! I wonder what that was like? Maybe you have written a hub about that I will hope that you did or will in the future:)
I have always wondered what it would be like to submerge yourself in another culture. I bet the customs and language barriers would make some interesting hubs! It is so beautiful there (barring the results from the most recent disaster. I love the Buddist approach to religion as well. It is such an interesting country - It will make an excellent hub:)!
I'll take whatever kind of sauce they serve! Haha! I want to try each kind. I do not care for Saki though - it so strong!
Autobiography of yogi describes such an experience, I hope you would enjoy reading that book too!
yes its Yogananda parmahansa, this book is now copyright free and can be read on net!
I remember reading his books years ago and was so intrigued. It reminded me of a memory of my brother. He use to read books to help teach him how to have outer body experiences and it actually worked. I bet this was around the time Dr. Moody's books became well known. Excellent and captivating hub on your outer body experience.
Thank you for such an interesting Hub. I have been studying life after death, astral planes and the such for a little while now and am fully convinced there is more to our little planet and reality itself than what we perceive. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I am also going to search for those books you mentioned. I would love to read them and add them to my growing library. Thanks again.
"It reminded me of the first time I had ever read about the idea that we may not be our bodies." - I fully agree, the body does not define who we are for sure - just like the body of a car does not define the car or the walls of a house ... it has stuff inside ... we have stuff inside too : )
Now, this piece of writing made me wonder. If You were able to become the door so to speak, I am not sure how You can ask me how I can leave the Ego behind - the same way You left your body behind.
I think this is my best answer really and You helped. Basically You answered it lol.
"Anything is possible in my world, it just costs more" (more energy, more time, more whatever it takes ...).
I fully enjoyed this post! Beautiful. Cheers!
Interesting.
I also agree with You that leaving the body does not necessarily mean that one leaves the ego behind. I just thought it was a great example of our possibility of doing things - unimaginable things sometimes ...
All the best.
My first out of body experience I was eight years old I felt my self leave my body because of so much fear, I cannot remember how long I was outside of my body body but I know I could not feel nothing or connect with anything arround me, then I found myself laying on the couch and what brought me back was my mother bent down and looked into my eyes and smiled and then I came back to myself. Then at the age of 38 it happen again I was walking with a friend and all of a sudden I was above both of us looking down at myself and my friend talking , I thought what is this, and I came back.

SW, I appreciate this article very much. I watched the video by Dr. Moody and enjoyed the discussion between the two men on this subject.
Albert Einstein implied that everything that has ever existed was still in existence. He said, "People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion".
Time as we use it is merely a convenience. I believe, as do modern physicists, that there are many dimensions that we cannot see. We live in a 4 dimentional world, but have a tendency to think of it 3 dimentionally.
If the soul or spirit is the life force that inhabits us, then I think, that entity just leaves this dimension, when the body wears out, and goes on to another dimension.
And, as Max Planck indicated the universe is made up of only energy, vibrating at different frequencies which give the appearance of solid matter.
I feel that we are eternal beings, finding our way through levels of awareness.
